Paul Smith’s College student selected to represent U.S. at international academy

Paul Smith’s College student Adaiah Bauer will be travelling to Kazan, 俄罗斯, this June as the one American selected for the Volunteer Leaders Academy, an eight-day forum hosted by the International University Sports Federation (国际大体联).

Bauer is one of 100 selected participants from 96 different countries to attend the academy, which includes workshops 和 lectures focused around developing sports event management skills 和 international cooperation, as well as to provide vital networking opportunities. Thous和s of American students from all 50 states applied, with Bauer finishing atop the list.

“I’m really thankful that I have the opportunity to travel to 俄罗斯 和 learn more about 国际大体联,鲍尔说。. “I’m really excited to get over there, meet new people, 和 see what this is all about.”

国际大体联, recognized by the International Olympic Committee 和 organizers of the World University Games, selected Lake Placid to host the 11-day, 2,400 athlete event in 2023.

Bauer brings an already strong resume to the academy. She’s received multiple Academic All-American honors for sports including cross country, 运动攀登, 和 snowshoe racing. 今年三月, Bauer volunteered at the Winter Special Olympics hosted at Paul Smith’s, 和 soon after learned that she 俄罗斯-bound.

“Adaiah Bauer is a wonderful student athlete, but more importantly she is well on her way towards being a world citizen as the United States delegate,” said Paul Smith’s College Athletic Director Jim Tucker. “The 2018 国际大体联 Volunteer Leaders Academy will enhance her educational experience at Paul Smith’s College.”

The academy runs June 14-22 和 attendees will be housed at Kazan Universiade Village 和 learning at the nearby Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture Sport 和 Tourism.

Bauer’s upcoming trip also coincides with the college’s ongoing Olympic sports initiative, an effort that’s included the development of women’s hockey, a greater emphasis on Nordic skiing training 和 competition, 和 planned facility expansion for sports including climbing 和 mountain biking. Bolstered online coursework will better support travelling student athletes, 和 a new major in sports 和 events management is awaiting final approval.

Last year’s Volunteer Leaders Academy was the first of its kind. Following its success, the 国际大体联 General Assembly decided to make the academy an annual occurrence.
